Install Quirl
Quirl is free on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Pick your device — it only takes a few minutes.
The files are hosted on GitHub. GitHub sees your IP address when you download. Quirl itself sends nothing.
Windows
- Open your “Downloads” folder. Right-click
quirl-windows-x64.zipand choose “Extract All”. - Move the extracted folder to a permanent place, for example your user folder.
- Open
quirl.exein that folder.
Blue warning on first start? Quirl is not yet signed with Microsoft. Click “More info” and then “Run anyway”.
Tip: Right-click quirl.exe and choose “Pin to Start”.
Then you find Quirl quickly.
macOS
- Open
quirl-macos.dmgfrom your downloads. - A window with Quirl opens. Drag Quirl into the “Applications” folder in the Finder sidebar.
- Open Quirl from the “Applications” folder.
“Cannot be opened”? Quirl is not yet checked by Apple. To open it anyway:
- Choose Apple menu › “System Settings” › “Privacy & Security”.
- Go to “Security” and click “Open”.
- Click “Open Anyway”.
- Enter your password and click “OK”.
The button is there for about an hour after your first try. After that, Quirl starts normally.
Linux
For 64-bit computers (x86_64). Pick a format.
AppImage
Runs almost anywhere. Brings everything along, including text recognition for photos.
How to install
- Right-click the file › “Properties” › allow “Run as a
program”. Or in a terminal:
chmod +x quirl-linux-x86_64.AppImage - Double-click the file to open it.
- It does not start? Then FUSE 2 is often missing. Ubuntu 22.04
and newer:
Ubuntu 24.04:sudo apt install libfuse2sudo apt install libfuse2t64
Flatpak
In its own sandbox. The first time, it fetches the GNOME runtime from Flathub.
How to install
In a terminal, in the folder with the file:
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists --user flathub https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
flatpak install --user quirl-linux.flatpak
To start: from the app menu or with
flatpak run com.bdgraue.quirl
Snap
For Ubuntu and other snap systems.
How to install
The file does not come from the Snap Store, so the install needs
--dangerous. In a terminal, in the folder with the file:
sudo snap install quirl-linux-amd64.snap --dangerous
So that Quirl finds your other devices on Wi-Fi and stores your AI key safely, allow these permissions afterwards:
sudo snap connect quirl:avahi-observe
sudo snap connect quirl:avahi-control
sudo snap connect quirl:password-manager-service
.deb
For Ubuntu, Debian, and Linux Mint.
How to install
In a terminal, in the folder with the file. The second command fetches missing packages, for example text recognition.
sudo dpkg -i quirl-linux-amd64.deb
sudo apt-get install -f
.rpm
For Fedora and openSUSE.
How to install
On Fedora, in a terminal, in the folder with the file:
sudo dnf install ./quirl-linux-x86_64.rpm
Updates
Quirl does not update itself on these devices yet. For an update, just download the new file from this page and install it as above. Your recipes stay in place.
